After 200 million years: one of the world’s largest fish officially extinct

One of the largest freshwater fish species in the world is officially extinct. It is the Chinese spoon Sturgeon, who survived for 200 million years and until the 1970s was not an unusual appearance in the longest river in Asia. Man put an end to it.

The Chinese spoon Sturgeon could be 7 meters long and weigh up to 450 kilos. In the eighties of the last century, the spoon Sturgeon was declared a protected species and in 2009, it was classified as seriously threatened. That didn’t do anything.

Fishers who recently searched for traces of the fish found nothing. That is why Chinese experts are now convinced that the fish completely disappeared between 2005 and 2010.

Last week, China imposed a 10-year ban on commercial fishing in over 300 protected natural areas along the Jangtsekiang.

All over the line, endangered species were found to have deteriorated there.
