3 Moroccans confess murder of Scandinavian tourists

Three Moroccan suspects have confessed to murdering the two Scandinavian women who were backpacking in the country in December. They said that they had committed their act after they had tried in vain to join the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).

The three suspects swore allegiance to IS in a video. That was three days before Louisa Vesterager Jespersen (24) from Denmark, and Maren Ueland (28) from Norway were murdered. Their bodies were on 17 December last year found in the village of Imlil, a popular hiking destination in the Atlas mountains in Marrakech.

Two of the three acquaintances at the court hearing that they beheaded the two, the third suspect filmed that. The video is said to have been shared with other IS sympathizers.

According to the authorities, the suspects are so-called ‘lone wolves’, who were otherwise not in contact with a terror group, but acted on their own. Yet another 21 people are on trial in the murder case, who may have been in contact with the three main suspects.
