3,000 years later: The face of the Pharaoh who transformed Egypt recreated

Amenhotep I, the second ruler of the XVIII dynasty of Egypt, died 3,500 years ago. His body is well-preserved, thanks to mummification. He became the first Pharaoh to be buried in the Valley of the Kings, the resting place of almost all the pharaohs of the XVIII, XIX, and XX dynasties. After his death, Amenhotep was worshipped as a god, primarily because during his reign, he led Egypt to an era of peace and prosperity.

Brazilian 3D designer Cicero Moraes has digitally reconstructed the appearance of Amenhotep. He created images of the Pharaoh by mixing faces drawn using various methods. One method involves the distribution of soft tissue thickness markers over the Pharaoh’s skull based on computed tomography data obtained from living individuals.

Another method is anatomical deformation, in which the digital image of the human head was adjusted until the skull shape coincided with that of the Pharaoh. Egyptologists created a tomogram of Amenhotep in 2021.

The reign of Amenhotep I continued the traditions of his father, Ahmose I, who expelled the Hyksos. Amenhotep successfully reunified Egypt, making the “New Kingdom” prosperous and secure; Amenhotep I also led the construction of religious buildings and successful military campaigns against the peoples of Libya and northern Sudan.
