4 dead in clashes between police and pro-Trump protesters in Washington

As a woman was shot dead during protests at the Capitol building in Washington on Jan.6, three other people died nearby requiring emergency medical attention, local police said. About fifty people were arrested for not respecting the curfew and carrying illegal weapons.

US police said four people died during tensions in Washington DC on January 6, when protesters supporting Donald Trump stormed the Capitol as the presidential results were certified by Congress.

Shortly before, the seriously injured US Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was reported dead.

According to local police chief Robert Contee, the tragedy unfolded when uniformed officers from the Capitol Police clashed with the protesters.

Using his service weapon, one of the officials touched the woman. She was pronounced dead after being transferred to the hospital.

Three other injured people died near the Capitol as they required emergency medical treatment, he said. All the victims were adults.

Arrests

During the protests, 52 individuals were arrested, most of them for violating the curfew put in place in the District of Columbia by Mayor Muriel Bowser in response to the unrest. Some have been arrested for carrying illegal weapons.

Supporters of the outgoing President stormed the Capitol, pushing Congress to suspend the procedure for certifying the November 3 presidential election results. The police responded with the use of tear gas and stun grenades.
