5-6-7-8-9: fuss about remarkable result of South African lotto
The winning numbers in South Africa’s national lottery were found to be consecutive on Tuesday, the reason for fraud allegations on social media. An investigation into the PowerBall lottery is underway, the BBC reports.
The winning numbers were 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, while the so-called power ball came in at 10. Twenty people had guessed this correctly, and each won more than 5.7 million rand. Some 79 others only got the first five digits correct. They received more than 6,283 rand.
Lottery company Ithuba congratulated the winners. “These numbers could be unexpected, but we see that many players choose to play with these series.”
Allegations can be read as a scam on Twitter. Others called for an investigation. The regulator NLC called the result unprecedented and started an investigation. “This occurrence, while uncommon, is not impossible, with the odds of any set of numbers selected for PowerBall being 1 in 42 million,” it said.
