8th consecutive Bayern Munich title: 30th coronation in an empty stadium

A decisive pass from Robert Lewandowski to Jerome Boateng gives Bayern Munich victory against Werder Bremen. This victory puts an end to the suspense of the German championship two matches from the end.

Bayern won their 11th consecutive Bundesliga victory, which gives them 10 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who have only three matches left to play.

Bayern Munich finished the match with ten men after the exclusion of Alphonso Davies for two yellow cards. Polish striker Lewandowski has scored 31 league goals this season, a figure that equals the record of goals scored in a season by a foreign player in the league.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, now at Arsenal, scored 31 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund in 2016-17. Bayern was far from at their best against a Werder Bremen team struggling for their survival at the bottom of the rankings.

A victory in unusual circumstances

With seven points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, their closest rival, three games to the end, Bayern Munich had to win in their last three games to win a new title. When Bayern won the title on the final day of last season, they did so after a resounding 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in front of 75,000 spectators at the Allianz Arena.

On Tuesday, no supporter was present in the Weserstadion of Werder Bremen, with a capacity of 42,000 seats, as the match ended in heavy rain.

The final whistle was greeted by cries of joy from the Bayern Munich players that resonated in the empty stadium. We were far from the celebrations of previous titles before the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s amazing the kind of football we’ve played in the last few months,” said Flick, a four-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern as a player. “We could feel the passion, the joy of the game, and the team spirit.”
