Floods in Niger claim 64 lives

Heavy rainfall in the African country of Niger has already caused 64 deaths this summer. The government reports that. The country, which usually suffers from drought, has been hit by flooding since the start of the rainy season in June. This has led to flooding and landslides.

Several buildings collapsed as a result of the rainfall, killing 32 people. Another 32 victims drowned in large amounts of water after the floods.

According to the Niger government, the extreme weather conditions have affected nearly 70,000 people and destroyed or damaged more than 5,000 homes.

The worst affected regions are Maradi in the south, Agadez in the Sahara, and the capital, Niamey. The situation has also led to an outbreak of cholera, which has killed 16 people.
