Bolsonaro wants to move Brazilian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

The new president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, wants the Brazilian embassy in Israel to move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. During the election campaign, the right-wing populist made clear that he is in favour of moving the embassy.

The right-wing populist Bolsonaro confirmed in an interview with the Israeli magazine ‘Israel Hayom’ that he wants to relocate the Brazilian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “You must be able to decide what the capital of Israel is, not the other countries,” is his reasoning.

If he keeps his word, ‘Brazilian Trump’ follows the example of his American colleague. In December 2017, the American president announced that he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump added the word: on May 14, the American embassy of Tel Aviv moved to Jerusalem. Guatemala and Paraguay said they would also move their embassy, but in the meantime Paraguay has returned to that decision.

The status of the city of Jerusalem is a very sensitive issue. Israel sees all Jerusalem as its capital, but the Palestinians hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of their future state. The international community is urging a negotiated solution.
