Cameroon: John Fru Ndi step down for youths

National President of the main opposition party in Cameroon, Ni John Fru Ndi, said he would not run for the 2018 presidential elections.

Speaking at the forum of the SDF congress in Bamenda, the founder of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) says he wants to make room for the youth of the party that he leads since 1990, reports by africanews.

I will not run for the presidential election. I decided to give my place to my younger cadets in the party. I stand here to make it clear that I’m passing the torch to the person you choose,” said John Fru Ndi.

The politician was a presidential candidate in 1992, 2004 and 2011. The only election in which he did not participate is that of 1997, when the SDF decided to boycott the elections.

The party will meet on Friday or Saturday to elect the candidate he will present in front of the Democratic Rally of Cameroonian People (CPDM, the party in power). According to analysts, the Vice President, Joshua Osih, 49, is a favorite to his estate.
