Cameroonian separatists launch their cryptocurrency ‘Ambacoin’

The separatists in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon have launched their own cryptocurrency called “AmbaCoin”, according to the message on their information website, Ambacoin.

They want to create a separatist state called Ambazonia, and this currency is the last symbol of the nation that the rebels tried to adopt, with their blue and white flag and their anthem.

An AmbaCoin is selling 0.25 cents (£ 0.18), reports Quartz, and is currently on pre-sale before the “major initial coin issue scheduled for December 24”.

Their information website adds that AmbaCoin was “designed and built by an anonymous group of English-speaking separatist academics, technocrats and developers”.

The official currency of Cameroon is the Central African Franc (CFA), which is linked to the French Treasury. Some have called for the abandonment of the CFA, which they consider a “colonial currency”.
