Covid-19 with new ‘hotspots’: Many countries report twice increase in number of infections

While many countries in the world are lifting their measures against the spread of the coronavirus, the global infection rate is multiplying faster than ever before. The New York Times calculated this based on the official figures that are updated daily.

According to the US daily, twice as many countries have reported an increasing number of infections in the past two weeks. On May 29, with 125,511 infections in one day, more new cases were reported than ever before. The increase is mainly due to new hotspots in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

In total, 6,596,713 infections have been reported, of which 3,188,018 people have been cured. And although we are gradually dreaming of resuming ‘normal’ life, without corona, the end does not seem to be in sight for the rest of the world.

Affected countries

In Brazil, the lung virus now claimed more than 30,000 lives, and today, another record number of deaths were reported. In addition, there are 584,562 infections in the Latin American country.

As many as 8,831 new cases were added in the past 24 hours. Experts believe that the figures are an underestimate of reality because the Latin American country tests very few people.

Yet Brazil ranks fourth in the list of countries with the most deaths, after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The country is second in the ranking with the most infections after the US.

The number of new infections is also increasing faster than ever in Egypt. With 28,615 infections, the country is still a bit behind the rankings, but the curves in the country continue to rise sharply.

In Iran, 3,574 new infections with the coronavirus were reported in 24 hours. In the country, the number of infections has been rising for more than a month and has accelerated in recent days. In the past 24 hours, it even peaked at 3,186 on March 30.

Bangladesh had to deal with super cyclone Amphan after the passage of Covid-19. As a result, numerous houses were destroyed, and residents had to evacuate to refugee camps. That was, of course, complicated by the corona pandemic.

For example, a first fatality was reported this week, who died of Covid-19 in one of the refugee camps. In addition, 2,423 infections have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours.

Test capacity

The increasing number of infections naturally also has something to do with the increased test capacity. A lot more tests are carried out in the rest of the world than at the beginning of the crisis.
