Dozens of kidnapped girls released in Nigeria

Dozens of kidnapped students in Nigeria have been released. The youngsters had been taken by armed men earlier this month. They have now let their victims go, the governor of the area confirms.

The kidnappers had stormed a school in the northern state of Nigeria. They took more than 40 people, including 27 students. Governor Abubakar Sani Bello said all victims have now been turned over to authorities.

Among other things, they had sent an imam into the forest to negotiate with the kidnappers.

It is more common for armed gangs in Nigeria to kidnap people and demand ransom. More than 300 girls were taken yesterday after a raid on their school in Zamfara state.

Last December, 344 schoolboys were kidnapped in Katsina. They were released after six days.
