El Paso eighth most deadly shooting in the U.S.

The Las Vegas attack on October 1, 2017, is by far the deadliest in the history of the United States. Stephen Paddock (64) then shot 58 people. The shooting in El Paso yesterday, with 20 dead, stands at eight in the tragic top ten.

The 64-year-old Stephen Paddock has the highest number of deaths on American soil due to a one-man operation on his conscience. He fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on the 30,000 visitors to a country festival on the famous Strip.

58 people died. In total, also due to the panic that broke out, another 851 attendees were injured, of whom 422 were shot by Paddock. The shooter robbed himself of life in his hotel room.

A 21-year-old shooter, Patrick Crusius, opened fire at Walmart yesterday in a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas. In the hate crime, which treats the FBI as a terrorist act, 20 victims died and 26 were injured. It is thus the eighth most fatal shooting ever in America. Crusius lived in Allen, 900 km from the site of the mass murder.

With his semi-automatic weapon, Nikolas Cruz killed 17 students and employees of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen others were injured. Cruz was able to escape initially but was later arrested. He confessed to the mass murder.

The only shooting in the sad top ten that predates the 80s is one from Texas. On Thursday it was 53 years ago that former Marine Charles Whitman (25) went to the observation deck on the tower of the main building of the University of Texas in Austin with various weapons as luggage.

For more than an hour and a half, he fired at people on campus and in the surrounding streets, until a cop and a citizen could locate him and shoot him. The madman himself killed 16 people, including an unborn baby. 31 others were injured. Whitman had also killed his wife and mother the night before, bringing the total number of deaths to 18. In 2001 another victim died of his 1966 injuries.

The couple Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, IS-supporters, shot 14 people dead at a staff party at a care center in San Bernardino and injured about 20. The perpetrators fled, but the police could later shoot them. IS claimed the assessment.

A US Army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, shot 13 people at Fort Hood’s military base near Killeen in Texas. More than thirty others were injured. Hasan is said to have been bullied by his colleagues. The shooter, responsible for the deadliest mass shooting party ever on an American army base, was sentenced to death. He was hit during his murderous raid himself and has since been paralyzed in the lower limbs.
