Ethiopia declares unable to repatriate its students from Wuhan

The Ethiopian authorities have informed students from their home country living in Wuhan that they “cannot” be repatriated due to the “lack of means” required for their quarantine.

“The Ethiopian embassy in China has written a letter to the Ethiopian Students Union in Wuhan informing them that they cannot be evacuated and repatriated to Ethiopia due to the lack of means to quarantine them after their return,” can be read from BBC Monitoring reports, which quotes the Ethiopian newspaper The Reporter.

More than 300 Ethiopian students stranded in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic, have asked their government to repatriate them.

“The question of the repatriation of Ethiopian students from Wuhan to Ethiopia must be considered as a simple question of organization of flights or financial management, but it must be in accordance with the standards of the WHO (World Health Organization ) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, in terms of quarantine equipment, laboratories, and health professionals,” added the embassy.

More than 68,000 people have been infected worldwide. And the vast majority of them are in China. Nearly 1,700 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus since its onset in December.

The first case of coronavirus in Africa was recorded in Egypt. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, the patient is a stranger. His nationality has not been revealed.
