Evariste Ndayishimiye: The new president of Burundi

The new president of Burundi. Evariste Ndayishimiye, the candidate of the ruling party, has become the new leader of the country officially.

At the end of the 20 May 2020 presidential election, Evariste Ndayishimiye was declared the winner with 68.72% of the votes, according to official figures announced on Monday on Burundian national television by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

General Ndayishimiye, 52, who succeeds President Pierre Nkurunziza, who has been in power since 2005 and had decided not to run for a fourth term, had dubbed Ndayishimiye as his “heir”.

Evariste is well ahead of the main opposition candidate, Agathon Rwasa, president of the National Council for Liberty (CNL), who received 24.19% of the vote. The latter had already described these results as “fanciful” in advance.

Foreseeing from the beginning, the latter has made it clear that he would not call for an appeal to the street for the time being and would be satisfied with an appeal to the Constitutional Court. Without having any illusions about its outcome, as he considers this body subject to power.
