Five dead in a shipwreck in Congo

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, five people lost their lives when the boat they were partying on sank on Lake Kivu. The owner of the ship, a German, was arrested according to the local authorities.

It often happens that boats capsize on the Congolese lakes. However, this usually concerns accidents with overcrowded commercial ships.

The ship that sank on Saturday, however, was a small pleasure boat on which about 20 young people were building a party.

Five people were killed in the accident, said the mayor of Ibando, a borough of Bukavu.

The boat owner was arrested Monday. “He has not taken any measures regarding the capacity of his boat,” said the provincial minister of Transport.

“The boy didn’t wear life jackets, either.”
