Forget those expensive Galaxies and iPhones: these smartphones rock

When you are looking for a new smartphone you do not only have to look at the ‘big three’: there are numerous brands outside of Samsung, Huawei and Apple that have excellent devices on the market.

Here are the five best ‘underdogs’ of the moment.

Google Pixel 3a

With that price of within $430, the Pixel 3a is not easy: competition in the mid-class segment is fierce, and manufacturer Google has to compete with devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Huawei P30 Lite, both phones with more modern designs and faster hardware.

Google throws it on what it is good at: fast updates, long support, a bare version of Android and a camera that delivers beautiful photos in all circumstances. Moreover, the guarantee of three years of updates is something that you will still find with very few competitors.

Xiaomi Mi 9

The Mi 9 is a high-end smartphone, for which you pay a lot less than for competing models. With the price within $563 gives you a phone with a nice and large OLED screen, the latest high-end processor from manufacturer Qualcomm, enough memory and storage, and three rear cameras, including one with ultra-wide angle lens and one with a telephoto lens.

There are also disadvantages: for example, Xiaomi’s own software contains (Miui) advertisements. And the 3.5 mm jack is missing, just like stereo speakers, water resistance and optical stabilization on the cameras.

Nokia 9 PureView

The Nokia 9 PureView surprised at the last Mobile World Congress with its five cameras at the back. The photos that you take with that are really great.

The screen is also worth mentioning, including support for High Dynamic Range (hdr), a technology that makes a wide color spectrum possible. It also charges wirelessly. Cons? It no longer has an audio plug and the battery scores rather poorly.

OnePlus 7

The lion’s share of the innovative power of OnePlus has gone to the OnePlus 7 Pro, but the ‘normal’ OnePlus 7 is also a device that impresses. And that thanks to the stereo speakers, the faster fingerprint scanner and the overall speed of the device.

The OnePlus 7 is perhaps not very innovative, but affordable, while the OnePlus 7 Pro is sexy, but with more than 788 dollars a bit more expensive than its predecessor.

LG V40 ThinQ

That the LG V40 ThinQ would be difficult at the beginning of this year, was in fact already established. The device is therefore equipped with hardware and software from 2018, even though it came on the market in 2019.

Between the flagships, there are already better devices for sale, but in terms of price, the V40 Thinq is now competitive. Positive points of the V40 are also the housing that looks beautifully finished and the camera – in terms of both functions and quality. In terms of screen and battery performance, he again disappoints us.
