If you cheat, you’re more likely to commit fraud at work.

Those who cheat also show themselves from their less reliable side at work. That is the conclusion of an American study of more than 11,000 people.

Researchers at the McCombs School of Business (Austin, USA) examined the relationship between sexual infidelity and professional behavior. They found a strong correlation among the 11,235 people studied.

The group who was unfaithful to his partner in his private life, experienced professional misconduct twice as often. At work, they behaved less ethically. For example, they committed fraud.

“Have an affair”

The researchers used data from the Canadian online dating service Ashley Madison. It focuses on people who are already in a relationship, with the slogan “Life is short. Have an affair.” Four years ago, 36 million user accounts were made public through a hack.

For the study, the researchers focused on data from police officers, financial advisers, senior executives, and white-collar criminals. Of these groups, professional misconduct databases exist in the United States.

“Our results show that personal sexual behavior is correlated with professional behavior,” said Samuel Kruger, one of the researchers. “Eliminating sexual misconduct in the workplace can have the added benefit of contributing to a more ethical corporate culture.”

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
