Indonesia: Angry mob massacred nearly 300 crocodiles

A crowd of angry villagers massacred hundreds of protected crocodiles in Indonesian Papua after the death of an Indonesian killed by one of the crocodiles.

The facts occurred last Saturday on a farm, shortly after the burial of the deceased.

The villagers armed with knives, machetes and shovels rushed on the crocodiles.

The 48-year-old victim went to collect herbs for his cattle when he entered the crocodile compound without realizing it. He was bitten on one leg and then the other crocodile killed him with a tail stroke.

“An employee heard the cries of distress from a man. He quickly arrived on the scene and saw a crocodile attacking on the victim,” said the head of the Indonesian Natural Resources Conservation Agency in West Papua, according to the BBC.

Police and authorities present at the scene were unable to stop the massacre. They plan to take legal action against the attackers. According to Indonesian law, killing a protected species is a crime punishable by a fine or imprisonment.

Though some of the family members are locals, this farm is too close to a residential area, in this large port city of just over 200,000 inhabitants.
