Infected NBA player apologizes for misplaced joke: “I put people at risk”

Rudy Gobert, the first NBA player to test positive for the new coronavirus, apologized on Twitter for a misplaced joke following the pandemic. “That was a lack of insight. I put people at risk,” said the French basketball player.

Earlier this week, Gobert mocked the coronavirus at a press conference. After an inevitable question about the Covid-19 virus, the French center of Utah Jazz ostentatiously touched all microphones. He received a lot of criticism. Two days later, 27-year-old Gobert was the first NBA player to test positive for the virus.

“I want to thank everyone who has expressed his support. Since my diagnosis, I have been going through an emotional rollercoaster. I feel fear and sometimes shame,” said the French international. “I want to apologize to the people I put at risk. I didn’t think I would carry the virus. I lacked insight and recognition at the time.”

The American channel ESPN yesterday revealed that teammates regret Gobert’s negligent behavior. The All-Star would have ostentatiously touched the players and their belongings in the dressing room. A day later, teammate Donovan Mitchell took a positive test for the coronavirus.
