Madrid environment hit by a fierce hailstorm: “A flood never seen”

The broad area of Madrid was hit by a fierce hail storm last night, leaving many streets blank. Dozens of cars dragged into the swirling stream. The fire brigade of the Spanish capital received at least 150 calls.

There are currently no reports about possible victims, but some hospital is partly flooded. Several metro lines were interrupted. Aircraft had to divert to other airports. Fruit growers have not yet been able to determine the damage to their orchards.

The hailstorm started around 6 p.m. and lasted less than ten minutes, after which heavy rain fell from the sky. A resident of Arganda del Rey near Madrid spoke to El Mundo newspaper of “an unprecedented flood.” 46.4 liters of rain per square meter fell in this suburb.

Images on the social media show numerous videos where residents are busy with buckets and spades to remove the hail mare. Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed his solidarity with those affected by the hailstorm.
