Number of corona deaths worldwide rises above 200,000

The coronavirus emerged at the end of December in the Chinese city of Wuhan. By now, the virus is under control in China, it has spread all over the world, and the United States is the worst affected country.

It took nearly 90 days after the first death on 9 January for 100,000 people to succumb to the effects of the infection. It was barely 16 days after that before the figure of 200,000 was exceeded.

In comparison, approximately 400,000 people die each year from malaria, making it one of the deadliest infectious diseases on the planet.

On Thursday, 9 April made it 100 days since the World Health Organization (WHO) received the first reports of the new coronavirus. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported this on Twitter. More than 1.5 million people worldwide have now been infected with Covid-19.

Number of infections

According to John Hopkins, the United States was hit hardest with 958,863 infections, followed by Spain (223,759), Italy (195,351), Germany (156,513), United Kingdom (148,377), and France (124,114). China is in ninth place with 84,325 infections, according to the report on 26 April.

Number of deaths

The United States paid the heaviest toll in human life, with 54,161 deaths so far. Italy is following with 26,384. Johns Hopkins registered 15,238 fatalities in Spain, 12,210 in France, and 7,097 in Great Britain.

African countries are on the less interactive map, with 1,373 deaths.
