One of the last countries to have escaped Covid is now affected

Micronesia, one of the world’s last countries so far not yet affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic, has announced that it has recorded its first case of Covid.

The very closed club of countries not yet affected by the Covid-19 pandemic has become even more so after the Federated States of Micronesia announced that it had detected a first positive case.

The patient is a sailor who arrived from the Philippines. He is now confined with the other sailors in a lagoon of the archipelago of nearly 100,000 inhabitants. Referring to “alarming” news, President David Panuelo nevertheless assured that the situation was under control.

Five countries still spared of Coronavirus

This leaves only five countries in the world untouched by the pandemic, including Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Tonga, and Tuvalu, all of which are Pacific island states, not counting North Korea and Turkmenistan, countries with populations of nearly 25 million and six million respectively, but whose governments claim not to have detected any cases of Covid.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University in the United States, the total number of contamination cases with the novel Coronavirus stands at more than 90 million worldwide, and more than 1.9 million people have died of the suites of Covid-19.
