Petition: Stars from around the world demand the release of Bobi Wine

They closely follow the record of the singer, philanthropist, that become MP, Robert Kyagulanyi better known as Bobi Wine.

They are dozens of artists, cultural and sports actors from Africa and around the world.

On Tuesday, they signed a petition demanding that the Ugandan government will release the parliamentarian.

Perfect match between the Beninese diva Angelique Kidjo, Ugandan Eddy Kenzo, Nigerian Femi Kuti, the American Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay and several other stars of showbiz on the file of the Ugandan deputy Bobi Wine.

These artists took offense to “the arrest, imprisonment and brutal physical aggression, threatening his life, led by Ugandan government forces” in a petition broadcast on Wednesday.

An unconvincing video
The petition on which Nigerian Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate of literature, as well as international footballers, also condemns the assassination of Bobi Wine’s driver, Yasin Kawuma, as well as the beating and arrest of three other opposition members.

Detained for about 10 days for allegedly illegal possession of firearms, the MP is in the hands of the army, accused of having tortured him several times. To deny this information, the army released this Wednesday a very short video of less than 10 seconds in which Bobi Wine appears exhausted, although sketching a smile.

The artists who signed the petition call on the Ugandan government to ensure access to medical treatment and an impartial investigation. They also promise to remain “vigilant” and use their “voices and networks” to demand the immediate and unconditional release of the deputy and the “legal and humane treatment” of those detained by him.

Wine is expected to appear this Thursday in a military court for the start of his trial.
