Putin gives go-ahead for Russian naval base in Sudan

Vladimir Putin has approved the Russian government’s proposal to create a naval base in Sudan. Last week, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin gave the green light to a draft agreement on its creation and ordered to present the proposal to the Head of State to sign it.

“Adopt the proposal of the Russian government to sign an agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Sudan on the establishment of a material and logistical support point of the Russian Navy on Sudanese territory,” the document published on the official legal site pravo.gov.ru says. The agreement on behalf of Russia will be signed by the Ministry of Defence.

A base capable of accommodating 300 men and four ships

The project had previously been discussed with the Sudanese side and the Russian Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs. It foresees that the base will accommodate no more than 300 men and four ships simultaneously. The Russian side will operate it.

The draft agreement published on Wednesday 11 November concerns the establishment in Sudan of material and logistical support points in order to ensure “repairs, supply operations and rest for crew members”.

The agreement will remain in force for 25 years, with an automatic renewal of 10 years if neither of the parties requests its termination beforehand.
