Several influencers sentenced to prison in Egypt

The Egyptian court sentenced five female influencers to two years in prison and fines of more than 17,000 USD dollars for breach of morality.

A court in Cairo has sentenced five Egyptian social network influencers to two years in prison for indecent assault, on Monday (27 July), quoting a judicial source.

The verdict was handed down against Mawada al-Adham, Haneen Hossam, and three other young women who posted videos on the social network TikTok that were deemed immoral by the country’s authorities.

In addition to the two years in prison, the five women, who are all under arrest, each have to pay a fine of 300,000 Egyptian pounds (nearly 18,000 dollars), the agency said.

A controversial proposal

Arrested in April, Haneen Hossam, who has 1.3 million subscribers on TikTok, had posted a video in which she assured her subscribers that girls could “make money by working with her”, which was a sparking controversy on social networks.

In recent years, Egypt has passed a series of laws allowing the blocking of websites considered a threat to national security and the monitoring of personal social media accounts with more than 5,000 subscribers.
