Sudanese Prime Minister escapes assassination attempt

Abdallah Hamdok, Sudanese Prime Minister, escapes an assassination attempt. An explosion hit the vehicle that transported the Prime Minister on Monday.

“An explosion took place as Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok’s car drove past us, but thank God no one was injured,” Ali Bakhit, an agent in the Prime Minister’s office, told AFP. The Prime Minister was reportedly placed in a safe place.

According to the AFP news agency, images from state television showed several damaged vehicles at the site of the explosion. But according to the Reuters news agency, witnesses claim that the attack occurred near the northeast entrance to the Kober Bridge, which links North Khartoum to the city center, where the Prime Minister’s office is located.

According to witnesses, the convoy seems to have been targeted.

Hamdok was appointed head of Sudan’s transitional government last August, a few months after the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir. He is a former economist who made his career at the United Nations.

He said during his appointment that one of his main priorities is to resolve the economic crisis in Sudan. He was appointed by the six-member Sudanese Sovereign Council, composed of six civilians and five military officers, to lead a three-year transition to civilian rule after El Bashir’s ouster.
