Tension in Goma during a dead day

The opposition’s call for a general strike in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been poorly monitored in the country. However, in Goma clashes were reported between a small number of youth and police on Friday.

The police fired tear gas at the popular Majengo neighbourhood of Goma where two large markets were closed.

In Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, commercial activity and traffic were normal, according to BBC correspondents. The political coalition around opposition candidate Martin Fayulu on Thursday called for a “dead city” day across the DRC to protest the postponement of the Sunday elections in Beni and Butembo (East) officially because of the epidemic Ebola and violence.

In Butembo, a police and military presence is visible. The city was calm and normal activities.
