Theresa May in Africa

British Prime Minister Theresa begins her first African tour Tuesday in South Africa.

The British prime minister will also visit Nigeria and Kenya for discussions on the economy and security.

She will discuss with the partners on Brexit and its possible repercussions on the trade relations that her country has with African nations.

According to Downing Street, this will be the first visit of a British prime minister to sub-Saharan Africa since 2013, and the first in Kenya since Margaret Thatcher in 1988.

A new partnership with Africa
On the first day of her tour, the British prime minister delivered her speech in Cape Town.

She said she considers the countries she will visit this week as key partners and flourishing democracies, typical of 21st century Africa.

She pointed out that five of the fastest growing economies were in Africa and that the continent’s GDP is to double between 2015 and 2030.

By 2050, a quarter of the world’s population and consumers in the world will be Africans, she said.

However, a significant number of the world’s poorest people will also be in Africa.

The continent must therefore face the challenge of inclusive growth, she added.

African leaders told him that the biggest challenge they face is job creation.

Theresa May proposes as a response a new partnership with Africa based on shared prosperity.

It has announced plans for a British investment program of £ 4 billion ($ 5.1 billion) in African economies, with a similar amount for the private sector.
