Twenty-four dead in a plane crash in DRC

Mapendo residents in Goma City are among 24 people killed in the crash of a small plane belonging to a Congolese airline on Sunday morning. The plane crashed a minute after take-off, according to Nzanzu Kasivita, governor of North Kivu province, who briefed the BBC.

The aircraft, a Dornier-228 heading for the city of Beni, 350 km north of Goma, fell into the Mapendo district after “failing” its takeoff, Kasivita said. According to the local authorities, 17 passengers and two crew members were onboard the aircraft.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but some sources say that the plane suffered an engine failure just after takeoff, reports from different sources in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC.

Airplane accidents, which are relatively common in the DRC, are often caused by poor maintenance and low safety standards. Eight people were killed last October in the plane crash that took off from Goma airport.
