The Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, world champion in the 10,000-meter class, set a new world record on the five kilometers of road in Monaco on Sunday. He finished in 12 minutes and 51 seconds.

The 23-year-old Cheptegei was thus well ahead of the record of the Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto, who ran 13:18 on 12 January in Valencia.

The International Athletics Federation recognizes only two years of world records in the 5 km on the road.
