UN limit military mission in Somalia with a thousand men

The UN decided yesterday to reduce the African Union peace operation in Somalia (Amisom) in the context of military withdrawal. A thousand men will be brought back. Lately, more attacks have been taking place by Al-Shabaab terror militia in the capital Mogadishu.

The UN Security Council voted unanimously in favor of a UK resolution that allows the decision to be reviewed if the situation deteriorates. The number of soldiers will be limited to 19,626.

The mission, which was set up in 2007, is deployed in the south and the center of the country and consists of troops from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.

According to a timetable compiled in 2017, Amisom would gradually fall into the hands of the Somali security services. But the African Union has already expressed its concern because it is not certain whether the government can bear that responsibility because elections are planned for 2020.
