UN “utterly horrified” by murder of 5 aid workers in Nigeria

The United Nations says it is “utterly horrified” at the murder of five aid workers by unprecedented armed groups in northeastern Nigeria.

“They were dedicated humanitarian workers who devoted their lives to helping vulnerable people and communities in an area severely affected by violence,” United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria Edward Kallon said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The statement followed the release of a video showing the brutal murder. Aid workers were kidnapped last month in the northeastern state of Borno, presumably by Islamist terrorists.

President Muhammadu Buhari identified the victims as employees of the Nigerian crisis management agency and international aid agencies. The Nigerian government said it would do everything in its power to bring the perpetrators to trial.
