Unsuccessful comeback: McGregor (technically) knocked out by Poirier
Conor McGregor did not enjoy his return to the UFC. The 32-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter lost against American Dustin Poirier by technical knockout (TKO) in the second round.
McGregor was stronger than Poirier in the first round, but was surprised in the second. He took a series of hard punches and went to the canvas. “This is no surprise to me,” said Poirier.
“We are now even in terms of mutual fights. It’s 1-1 right now. Let’s do it again.” On the other hand, McGregor was bummed: “I’m disappointed, but I’ll be back.”
During the fight in the UAE, no title in the lightweight was at stake. Khabib Nurmagomedov holds the title, but he has since retired. The Russian took McGregor the world title
McGregor and Poirier met earlier in 2014. The Irishman beat Poirier in the first round by TKO. That also happened last year with welterweight Donald Cerrone, because McGregor was done with the American cage fighter in 40 seconds upon his return.
