World Cup match turns bloody in Uganda

A total of four people were killed on Sunday June 17 in clashes between refugees from South Sudan in a camp in Rhino, in the north-east of the country.

A dispute over a chair, as people watch a World Cup football match on television between Brazil and Switzerland (1-1), has turned into a confrontation between the Dinka and the Nuer.

The two communities from South Sudan slept with machetes and clubs.

Ugandan police said seventeen people were arrested after the fighting in the Rhino refugee camp.

This site is home to some of the four million South Sudanese who have fled their country in the past five years.

Ugandan police spokesman said the Dinka and Nuer communities have been separated since Sunday’s battle.

The rivalry between the two ethnic groups goes back several generations, but a quarrel between South Sudanese politicians in 2013 exacerbated the violence.
