Yahya Jammeh Persona non grata in the United States

The United States on Monday banned former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh from entering the country.

He is suspected of corruption during his 22 years of power.

The same ban applies to his wife, Zineb Yahya Jammeh, and his children, Mariam Jammeh and Muhammad Yahya Jammeh.

Their names appear on the US blacklist of alleged foreign leaders involved in large-scale corruption. Or in serious human rights violations, according to a statement from the US State Department.

The United States affirms to be with the Government of The Gambia, its people and its civil society, to support the democratic transition.

The Gambia was run unchallenged for 22 years by Yahya Jammeh until his defeat at the presidential end of 2016 against Adama Barrow.

Jammeh has been living in exile since January 2017 in Equatorial Guinea.
