Approximately 150,000 people have walked this afternoon in a demonstration against racism in Berlin. That’s a lot more than the 40,000 that were expected, say the organizers.
When the first demonstrators reached the Brandenburg Gate, the last participants were still two kilometres away at Alexanderplatz. The demonstration ended at the victory column at the zoo, where various performances took place.
“We are very pleased with the turnout,” said Felix Muller of the “Indivisible” initiative, to the German press agency dpa. “This confirms that many people wanted to give a sign against the right and for solidarity.”
Under the motto “For an open and free society – Solidarity instead of exclusion”, the alliance “Indivisible” had called for the protest. It is aimed at right-wing incitement, discrimination, refugee deaths in the Mediterranean and cuts in the social system.
