Canadians complaining about the cost of Harry and Meghan: “We didn’t ask for this”

Prince Harry and Meghan say they are entirely in love with Canada, but apparently, the Canadian people are not waiting for their imminent move. The costs needed to guarantee their safety are estimated at around $1 million per year. And that, of course, is at the taxpayer’s expense.

Canadian president Justin Trudeau assured the British royal family that he would take on the security of the couple. But that means that a large part of the costs will be passed on to the Canadian people. Already now, before a concrete move is planned, there is unrest around the issue. Meghan is already in Canada with her son Archie, and Harry will soon follow.

After all, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced that from now on, they will divide their time between North America and the United Kingdom. It’s not a question of ‘if’, but of ‘when’ the two will buy a permanent residence in Canada.

Revolt

The bomb already burst on Twitter. “If the Canadians have to pay a penny for Harry and Meghan, I’m moving,” someone writes. Or, “We’ll pay? Nobody asked for this!” Some inhabitants of the country even threatened with uprisings, and it had to come to an increase in taxes. “Can’t Harry and Meghan pay for their security?” another twitterer notes. “They are free to live where ever, just don’t expect others to pay for your choice. Harry is est. to be worth $25 million. He can/should pay for their security and not place this burden onto CDN taxpayers.”

Governor-General

However, according to recent polls, the Canadians saw Prince Harry as Governor-General, the representative of the British queen Elizabeth II in the former colony. According to a survey by the Canadian newspaper National Post, 61% of Canadians would be in favor. He would then succeed the current woman in that position, the former Canadian astronaut Julie Payette. She was appointed to that position at the end of 2017, and usually, the term of office is five years.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy and part of the British Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. The monarch appoints the Governor-General on the proposal of the Canadian Prime Minister. Since the 1950s, the position goes to Canadians, but before that, they were British, so Harry fits perfectly into that role.

Now, however, opinion seems to have turned against him in a short period. “If that’s the way it is”, a Twitter user keeps it short. “Go home then, Harry and Meghan!”
