Climate activists hijack London fashion week

On the last day of London Fashion Week, the climate action group Extinction Rebellion organised a fake funeral to discuss the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Also on other days last week, they made themselves heard and seen in the British capital.

The first day of London Fashion Week didn’t start with a fashion show this year, but with an action of Extinction Rebellion in which they poured buckets of fake blood over each other. The environmental activists wanted to symbolize that the fashion industry is leaving things as they are, while they bear a big responsibility in the climate crisis.

The group wants the fashion weeks to be cancelled and tried to prevent guests from arriving at the fashion shows on time by setting up various actions around the show locations. Yesterday evening they organized a fake funeral as the closing point of the protest.

According to The Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP), a charity that works together with governments, companies and communities to stop the large waste mountain, more than 150 million euros worth of clothing ends up in garbage dumps every year. It is estimated that the fashion industry will also use up 25% of the world’s carbon budget by 2050, making it the most polluting industry after the oil industry.
