Congolese migrants flee Angola after “brutal repression”

Congolese migrants fleeing north-eastern Angola saying that they have been victims of violence. Tens of thousands of people have fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to escape attacks by security forces.

Many of them are diamond researchers who operate small-scale artisanal mines. The Reuters news agency has recounted reports of the events relaying reports that Angolan troops stormed the city of Lucapa and killed scores of people.

Houses were burned and property looted. Angola has denied these allegations of human rights violations. Angola recently announced plans to combat illegal mining activities. This is for the authorities to reform the mining industry and in particular the diamond industry in order to increase the revenue of the state
