Difference world in Italy: floods in the north, forest fires in the south

Italy has to deal with extremes: The north has again been hit by heavy thunderstorms, and scrub fires are still raging in the south.

In Tyrol, trees fell, and streams turned into raging rivers. In Ahrntal and Pflersch (Fleres) municipalities, the Civil Protection advised staying indoors last night.

Hail fell over the area north of Sterzing (on the Austrian border), and the wind was blowing hard. The weather service registered a precipitation value of approximately 86 liters per square meter in 24 hours.

The storms also moved over the regions of Venice, Friuli-Julian Venice, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna. The fire brigade had to turn out about 570 times.

In the area around the municipality of Sonico, about 100 kilometers north of Brescia, the river Oglio overflowed its banks. Roads were flooded and cars blocked. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Sicily

In the meantime, the extinguishing works are continuing in the south of the country. The highest alarm phase related to forest fires was in Sicily in particular.

Drought, heat, and strong winds continue to fan the flames. Fire-fighting planes were at work in many places on the large islands.
