For years, a Dutchman who had lived in the northern part of Nigeria was robbed and assaulted with a knife by three men last week. The man died of his injuries in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
His Nigerian partner reports this and a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the incident to the Telegraaf newspaper.
According to the partner of 74-year-old Nico van Greeks, the Dutchman was attacked by three armed men in his home in the northern state of Kano.
They are said to have carried knives and guns and demanded money. Ultimately, the perpetrators took an unknown amount of money, mobile phones, and a laptop, among other things.
The woman was shot in the fibula, Van Greeks herself was cut with a knife. De Telegraaf has photos in his hands showing that the man had suffered a head wound and bruises. His left eye was also closed, and there was a deep cut on his shoulder. The couple’s daughter, who was also present, was not injured.
Consular assistance
The Dutchman was taken to the local hospital, where he died of his injuries in the night from Saturday to Sunday. The man, who originally came from Eindhoven, had work in various sectors in Africa. For example, he was active in telecom, textiles, and fertilizers. He also worked as a consultant.
According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deceased man’s family will receive consular assistance.
