In Kenya, justice has invalidated the election of some legislators. Approximately 400 complaints have been filed in the courts since the August 8, 2017, general election to question the results.
In recent days, some parliamentarians have suffered the same fate as Uhuru Kenyatta, who had his victory overturned by the Supreme Court in September 2017.
Once again, Kenyan judges have uncovered many irregularities in the electoral process.
In Kenya, judges point to massive irregularities in elections in certain constituencies: unbuffered forms, violent campaigns or even more votes than the number of voters.
On March 2, opposition MP Babu Owino and Ahmed Kolosh saw their election invalidated.
To date, seven parliamentarians from different parties have lost their seats due to motions filed by their rival in court.
Some 400 complaints
Some will have to pay heavy fines, between 20,000 and 50,000 euros. The costs must also be borne by the Electoral Commission, implicated in some cases.
But in the Kenyan media, Wafula Chebukati, the president of the IEBC, is reassuring. Only 5% of the approximately 400 complaints filed were held and heard by the court, he said.
Wafula Chebukati assured that the commission is ready to hold by-elections whenever the courts will order. For that, it will be necessary to wait until the numerous calls are examined by justice.
