The former president of El Salvador, Elias Antonio Saca, has been jailed for ten years for corruption and money laundering. He also has to pay back 260 million dollars, attorney general Raul Melara announced on Twitter.
The Supreme Court confirmed the conviction of Saca and six of his associates by a court in El Salvador in September 2018. Saca was president from 2004 to 2009. Together with his associates, he embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars.
In addition to a ten-year prison sentence, Saca must also repay 260.7 million dollars to the state.
The six former employees of the president have been convicted of imprisonment for between three and ten years. They have to pay back between $ 900,000 and $ 15 million.
