Violent demonstrations have been shaking Ethiopia for several months. In the face of these anti-government protests, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia submitted his resignation to Parliament.
In a report released by state-run radio Fana, Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopian Prime Minister, said: “The prime minister said he had done his best to solve the crisis in his country and was resigning now to join of a solution”. For the moment, the parliament has made no progress on this request.
Anti-government demonstrations have been going on for several months in Ethiopia. They require more freedom from the central government This is the most significant revolt in 25 years. To ease tensions, the government released more than 6,500 opponents.
These demonstrations gave way to interethnic violence that left many dead. All of these movements have disrupted life and industry in one of Africa’s most dynamic economies.
The 53-year-old Prime Minister will continue to serve until the transition of power is complete. Besides, Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn intends to withdraw from the ruling party, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front.
Since the death of former Ethiopian head of state Meles Zenawi in 2012, Hailemariam Desalegn, a politician, has headed Ethiopia. He was also vice-president and foreign minister under the former head of state before taking power. In 2013, he assumed the presidency of the African Union.
