Facebook removes 16,000 groups associated with spreading fake news

Facebook has removed 16,000 more groups associated with spreading fake news. The British competition watchdog CMA reports this on Friday.

The move comes after a follow-up investigation found more evidence associated with disseminating misleading information on the social media platform. Facebook also worked on the systems to automatically identify and remove incorrect information.

Intervention

“Facebook has a duty to do everything it can to prevent the spread of this type of content on its platforms. After we intervened again, the company made changes. Still, it is disappointing to see that it took more than a year to implement it,” CMA said.

CMA’s demarche also means that Facebook has made it more difficult to find groups and profiles that trade in selling and distributing fake news.
