In the United States, the first passport with the gender ‘X’ was issued, however, this was previously feasible in these nations.
The United States has issued the first passport featuring an X next to the holder’s gender. This is seen as a significant step for non-binary Americans who do not identify as male or female.
A State Department spokeswoman expressed admiration for the passport issue, saying that the department is devoted to “supporting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all individuals, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community.” President Joe Biden has said that the LGBTQ+ community’s rights will be a top focus for his administration.
At the start of next year, Americans living overseas will be allowed to apply for passports with the gender X designation. Only a few nations throughout the world provide this form of an identification certificate.
According to a London-based interest organization, people from at least 11 nations may have X or ‘other’ in their passports.
These nations are Portugal, Argentina, Canada, Australia, Denmark, New Zealand, and Iceland. When it comes to gender, everyone in these nations has a third option on their passport.
In Germany and Austria, this option is also accessible but exclusively for intersex persons. There was no discussion in African countries over whether or not to add a third gender to the identification card, but most African countries prohibited it.
