Former defense minister temporary president in Mali after military coup

Following the August 18 military coup in the West African country of Mali, the ruling junta has appointed former Defense Minister Ba N’Daou as temporary president. This is what junta leader Colonel Assimi Goita announced on national television today.

The interim president must lead the country through the transition phase to a new civilian government.

Juniors Leader Colonel Assimi Goïta has been appointed temporary vice president. The swearing-in is scheduled for September 25. President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita fell in the coup.
