The G7 will release $20 million in emergency aid for the Amazon forest. The services of French President Emmanuel Macron have announced this on the fringes of the G7 summit in Biarritz.
With the money, the seven superpowers want to use firefighting aircraft of the Canadair type against the many fires that ravage the forest.
In addition to financing a fleet of fire-fighting aircraft based in the region, the G7 countries have also agreed on medium-term support to support reforestation in the Amazon region.
That part will be presented at the end of September at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This requires the agreement of Brazil and cooperation with NGOs and the local population, the Elysée explains.
