The Greek government is going to claim new damages from Germany for the Second World War. “What is historically correct must be tackled at the right time,” said Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias after meeting his German colleague Heiko Maas in Athens.
Greek parliament president Nikos Voutsis recently said in a speech in a village destroyed by the Wehrmacht in Crete, that later this year he wants to present the result of a long-term study on damages claims.
A commission set up by Parliament had advanced the amount of €289 billion in reparations three years ago. The Greek Parliament will probably appeal later this year to formalize the question. In Poland too, there are voices asking for reparations from the Germans for the damage by Nazi Germany.
For the Germans the issue of reparations has been settled since the ‘Two-plus-Four Convention’ of 1990, the treaty between the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany on the one hand, and France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union, on the other hand, which arranged German reunification. “No further reparations are foreseen”, says the German position since then.
